The University of Maryland Department of Neurosurgery is a respected leader in providing innovative neurosurgical programs to meet the diverse needs of the patients it serves. A dedicated team of experienced surgeons, nurse coordinators and neurosurgical nursing staff offer patients an array of treatments for all types of neurological conditions and also provide specialty services to other health providers and hospitals throughout the state of Maryland and the Mid-Atlantic Region.

The neurosurgery program was established in 1931. Since its inception, a strong commitment to excellence in patient care, research and education has been its focus. As part of a nationally recognized academic medical center, the Department of Neurosurgery has been able to train and prepare medical students in the most sophisticated techniques and procedures available.

The Department of Neurosurgery continuously strives to make surgical procedures safer, less invasive and more effective. Neurosurgeons can choose among a variety of leading edge treatment options that have revolutionized the field of neurosurgery.

The University of Maryland has the only neurosurgery department in Maryland to offer two different stereotactic radiosurgery systems that have been shown to dramatically reduce complications and improve outcomes: the Gamma Knife and the StealthStation system for image-guided surgery. These new technologies allow neurosurgeons to choose the system best suited to the treatment of different problems.

The Department of Neurosurgery offers individualized care aimed to improve the quality of life of patients. For more information or to inquire about a consultation or evaluation, call 1-800-492-5538.
